Microdermabrasion
is a process to remove sun-damaged skin, as well as
lessen scars and dark spots from the skin through
the partial or complete removal of the dead outermost
surface of the skin (known as Stratum Corneum) by
light abrasion. The procedure leaves skin with a fresh,
glowing look, though it has limitations in treating
deep wrinkles or sunken scars.
There are generally two methods in microdermabrasion:
Crystal and Non-Crystal. As the name suggests, the
former uses crystals to remove dead skin cells, which
are then vacuumed off by a suction device. The latter
uses abrasive paddles, usually diamond coated, to
remove dead skin cells which are then passed over
the treatment areas.
Because Microdermabrasion only affects the Stratum
Corneum and not the deeper layers of the skin, the
process is usually pain-free and can be completed
in as little as 30 minutes.
